Zoloft is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, also known as an SSRI. It was a medication that was approved by the FDA and introduced to the market by Pfizer in 1991. Zoloft, an antidepressant, was approved for the treatment of major depression in adults. It has also been approved and been successful in treating obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and social anxiety disorders in children and adults. Like most antidepressants, you cannot suddenly stop taking Zoloft. The body does become dependent upon the medication and when stopped suddenly withdrawal syndrome can result. Unfortunately Zoloft is like most medications as it may cause some unintended side effects. Some of the more common side effects include but are not limited to nausea, problems with erectile function, insomnia, diarrhea, dry mouth, tremor, dizziness, and changes in libido.
